In years past, you
could get away with running the operational aspects of your business completely
manually. Either you had someone who could do it, or you took the time out of
your busy week to handle those operational aspects yourself. These operational tasks
include everything from reconciling credit card transactions to managing
inventory. They are tasks that are necessary to run a business, but they are
also things that take time out of your busy day (or resources away from the
rest of your business).
Today, technology
allows you to manage every aspect of your business far more easily. Not only
are there systems and applications that you can use to make these tasks easier
and more efficient, but the systems that you use can be integrated with each
other, so that they can handle many of the manual reconciliation processes that
you would otherwise have to handle.
The core system
responsible for this in many businesses is the POS
system. For example, a retail store can use an advanced POS and credit
card terminal to take credit cards for payment. This information can then be
sent to your accounting system (via the point of sale system) to create a
transaction on your books. The information can also be sent to your inventory
system, which knows to deduct those items sold from inventory.
